Are Cb radios viable for use in survival situations? Yes and no. Yes because they are inexpensive, readily available, and you don't need a license to operate them. No because of their limitations in power output and being constrained to a single band. CB radio, like all HF radio communications, is very dependant on the 11-year sunspot cycle for propagation. When the susspot cycle is near its peak or at its peak then CB radio communications can be very effective and longreaching. But the CB band of 11 meters suffers from poor communications during the lesser periods of the sunspot cycle. The same is true for the amateur radio 10 meter band, which is quite close to the CB frequencies. But for short-range communications it is hard to beat a good CB radio along with a steel whip antenna.
